Back in 2015, I wrote about my first taste of F45, when I went to the opening of a friend’s F45 gym in the City.
Two years later and it’s clear the phenomenon is way more than a fitness fad. With around 500 F45 gyms in Australia and more than 750 worldwide, this is a way of working out that’s here to stay.
Why? Well for so many reasons.
Most of all, because F45 works.
It really works. If you go regularly (which you will, because you will become addicted ), watch your body, fitness levels and strength change for the better.
I’m lucky enough to have an awesome F45 right around the corner, in the Northern Beaches suburb of Frenchs Forest.
After just a week or so of getting sweaty with the Frenchs Forest crew, I quit my membership of my ‘conventional’ gym and made F45 my go-to for training. If you’re looking for me at 6am, I’ll be at F45 Frenchs Forest.

Coincidentally, the signature ‘Hollywood’ session on a Saturday morning has 27 stations. It’s a sign!
1. F45 is suitable for almost any fitness level.
I know a lot of people think ‘oh I couldn’t do it’ but YES. You can. Because each station can be modified. I do push ups on my knees, for example. If it’s a station with dumb bells, you choose your weight. You are always in control of the intensity at which you work. If Pull Ups are in the workout, I might only manage three (with the rubber bands) while someone might bash out 10 unassisted. You just keep pushing yourself a bit more every time, it doesn’t matter where you start.
2. It’s F. U. N.
I always think that unless it’s fun, why bother. I find doing weights at the gym a bit boring to be honest. Well, a lot boring. Zzzzzzzzz. F45 gets me lifting without dropping off.
3. You’re joining a community
You’re not just joining a gym, you’re joining a community. In our little F45 Frenchs Forest community, there are social events, Facebook groups, competitions… when you sweat with the same people day in, day out, you end up making friends with some like-minded souls. And it makes the workout more enjoyable too.
4. Awesome workouts
Every single F45 session is a seriously awesome workout. The amount of sweat you produce will prove it. Hoo ha!
5. Each session is different
Although each format has a name (like Hollywood, Loyals, Romans, Bears etc) no two F45 classes are the same. So you keep that body guessing and keep the workouts interesting.
6. Experienced coaches
The coaches are all experienced and hands-on, to help you get your form right, modify if necessary and push you where possible.
7. You don’t have to think about it
You turn up and you’re told what to do by the expert coaches. Too easy.
8. Great HIIT briefings
Before you start, the coaches take you through each station’s exercise so you know upfront what you’re in for, how to do it, and whether you need to ask the coaches for any modifications due to injury (or just plain old dodgy knees like me).
9. It’s a serious calorie burner
Being a HIIT workout, F45 is one of the most efficient ways to keep burning calories way after the class has finished.
10. Lots of options
There are multiple time options for a class every day, you’ll definitely be able to find one that fits into your schedule… at my local, F45 Frenchs Forest, there are 3 every weekday morning starting before 7am, a couple during the day and a couple in the evening. Plus two options for Saturday’s ‘Hollywood’ session. So much flexibility. Some days I do the 6am, others I pop in at lunchtime, depending on what’s going on in life.
11. It’s completely unpretentious
It’s a totally non-pretentious environment to work out in. There are no mirrors. No judgments. Everyone is so busy focussing on nailing their own station to be looking at anyone else. So even if you’re a bit self-conscious like me, you feel comfortable and welcomed.
12. It’s a global thing
The same workout is done at every F45 gym around the world at the same time, which is a pretty cool concept. So if you had a gruelling ‘Bears’ session one Wednesday morning, your friend on the other side of the city, the country, the planet would have done it too – you can compare notes. And Instagram pics 😉
You get a great mix of training – 2 strength/resistance workouts (Tuesday and Thursday) a week, 3 cardio plus Hollywood, which is a mix. Some cardio classes have a more ‘sprint’ focus, some more ‘endurance’. So you work your different energy systems as well as different muscle groups.
14. Membership gives you more than just the classes
The 8 week Define Challenge is free for members. You get meal plans, recipes, motivation and access to so much nutritional and training information through the challenge portal. Get scans and photos done before and after the 8 weeks and you’ll see amazing changes to your body.
15. You can try before you buy
F45 gyms will always let you have a free week’s trial, maybe two, check your local for details. You don’t need to commit until you know you’re in love. Shouldn’t take long.
16. You’re not spending hours at the gym
It’s a super-efficient way to use your time. Get to the gym, 45 mins of sweat, and you’re done. Then off to work you go, or back home to pack the lunchboxes and do the school run. Or back to bed. Whatever. It goes really quickly too 😉
17. Feel like a celebrity
If it’s good enough for Hugh Jackman to get in shape for Wolverine, it’s good enough for you.
18. Easy access
With so many F45 gyms popping up, there is bound to be one near you. Mine is four minutes drive away. Boom!
19. You get to learn new movements and exercises
Never done a burpee before? Pushed a sled? Tried a box jump? Welcome to F45, you’ll be adding a whole raft of exercises to your repertoire.
20. Value for money
It’s heaps cheaper than a PT, and because it’s so much fun and so addictive, you’ll end up going 5 or 6 days a week, which makes it great value. I guarantee it won’t be like other gym memberships where you pay and never ever go!
21. Track your performance
F45 have a proprietary heart rate monitoring system called F45 Lionheart. Keeps you honest for sure 😉 It tracks your heart rate and calories burned, producing reports so you can see how hard you’ve worked and how you’re progressing.
22. Music makes everything more fun, right?
The music is always PUMPING which is soooooo motivating. And on Saturday mornings, for ‘Hollywood’, there’s a live DJ. Have you ever worked out to a live DJ set? It’s the BEST. Seriously, the BEST.
23. Don’t worry if you have a short attention span
The TV screens dotted around the gym show Dan Conn (F45’s Athletic Director) doing each of the exercises, so you always have an easy visual point of reference for what you’re supposed to be doing. Which is helpful if you missed the coach showing you at the start because you were too busy chatting to your new sweat bestie.
24. Never have to wait for gym equipment
All the equipment you need is laid out for you at each station, making the thought process easy (haha but not the actual exercises!). And you never have to wait for someone to get off a machine or go hunting for the 12kg kettlebell.
25. Go light, go heavy, whatever’s right for you
There’s always a range of weights to choose from right there in front of you at each station. So it doesn’t matter if it’s the first time you’re picking up a dumb bell or whether you’re a fully shredded pro. There’s always the right one for you plus an opportunity to push yourself a little out of your comfort zone. Go on, do it.
26. Connection even outside of your gym
Once you’re in the #F45Family, you’re really part of something. Not just within your gym’s community, but the broader F45 tribe too. Whether you’re an instagrammer (hello jump shots in front of the massive F45 logo) or not, you belong. You can relate to each other, comfort each other in hours of sore quads, congratulate each other for another Athletica session completed without dying…
27. The High Fives!
The end of a class needs to be celebrated. It really, really does! The friendly F45ers have a tradition of high fiving everyone to mark the occasion. It kind of seals the deal on the workout, I like it.
Whilst all F45 gyms work to the same formula, completing the same workouts, each will have its own little identity too. And maybe even more reasons to love it. I reckon my F45 gym is better than yours 😉

28. Sunday morning yoga
We get a weekly Sunday morning yoga session as part of our membership. Perfect yin to balance the yang of all those sweat sessions.
29. Stretch and restore sessions
They also put on a weekly ‘stretch and restore’ session where you can help soothe those hard-working muscles and get heavily meditated.
30. Member feedback
Regular member surveys mean that the owners, David and Alicia Corsar, are always on top of what we want – be it more fans, a change of time for classes, a play pen for the kiddies so mums can come workout… awesome.
31. Wellness workshops
Regular evening wellness workshops, sessions on how to lift heavier and with better form… there’s always something ‘above and beyond’ going on at no extra cost that helps members improve their fitness, expand their knowledge and get together to get better at life.
