Isn’t it lovely when there’s more to a reality TV star than a pretty face or a hunger for fame?
I don’t watch The Bachelor (so shoot me) and when I met Sam Wood a couple of years ago at a JAGGAD event, I didn’t even know what he looked like.
Sorry Sam 😉
I guess, though, I was expecting someone a little caught up in their own PR. Or maybe a little superior and aloof. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. Sam and his gorgeous love Snez, could not have been more friendly, down to earth, fun and just, well, normal. I mean, the seriously good looking and fit end of normal, but normal. Nice. Smiley. Warm. Welcoming.
I really liked them both.
Sam was already in the fit biz before becoming famous, having founded Gecko Sports for kids many years ago. Since appearing on The Bachelor, his fitness empire (and more importantly, his reach) has grown significantly.
He opened The Woodshed, a brilliant gym in his home city of Melbourne, and launched his own fitness, nutrition and lifestyle program 28 by Sam Wood. 28 minutes of a Sam Wood workout every day for 28 days, plus meal plans, meditations and all you need to change up your life for the better.
Time to find out a bit more about the program (and the man), I took ten minutes of Sam’s time to chat all things health and fitness in the Wood world.
Sam, super congrats on being a Dad-to-be, how exciting for you, Snez and Eve. Tell me, what are you looking forward to most?
Holding my little girl for the first time and every single minute after that. I honestly cannot wait 🙂
Haha, she’ll be doing burpees before she can walk!
Speaking of burpees, two years ago I got to take part in an awesome training session at your newly-opened The Woodshed with the crew from JAGGAD. It’s such a great workout space!
What were your priorities when you were creating this training destination (and please can we have one in Sydney)?
I remember it like it was yesterday. The inspiration was to create two state of the art training spaces (personal training, and small group) but without it feeling like a typical gym.
We went with bright open areas with raw materials like timber and polished concrete with lots of light and plants. So that when you arrive you are met with a smile and can absorb the place without any intimidation or intense training right in your face.
Then in the 2 studios it’s all atmosphere and game on!
28 by Sam Wood
A lot has changed in your life since then… not just Snez’s pregnancy 😉
You launched ’28 by Sam Wood’ for a start. Which is your favourite ‘fitness baby’ – Gecko Sports, The Woodshed or 28?
They all have a special place and to be honest, Gecko was my first and a scary leap into business as a fresh faced 26 year old.
The Woodshed is where I train most days, a great local business and I have made so many friendships.
But nothing compares to 28. 18 months has flown by and thousands of lives are changing every day. Honestly feel like we have only just started, I learn so much every day and can’t wait to put everything I have into it and help so many more people.
Proudest ‘pinch-me’ career moment so far?
The success of 28. Over 70,000 people have done the program so far and I have never loved going to work every single day this much.
And any epic fails?
Haha. Plenty! I’ve made mistakes in all of my businesses. The biggest one is rushing in. I’m not terribly patient and I definitely look back at how I was 10 years ago and shake my head.
I love that people can jump on board your ‘28’ program every Monday. Why wait?! What else makes ‘28’ stand out from other programs?
The biggest thing is that it’s real. I send real-time raw videos to my 28ers, 3–10 times every single day. And we have my crew, nutritionists and other experts answering questions and proving support 7 days a week.
Favourite Recipe and Exercise
Fave recipe from the program?
My butter chicken. So delicious and a hit with the 28ers.
OK, I’ve got to try that. And what are your go-to exercises?
You can’t beat the basics when done right. A solid variation of squats to shock the body and keep the legs strong.
You always exude such genuine positivity, it’s infectious for your ‘28ers’. What do you do on days where you’re not feeling so perky but still have to front up to your tribe and motivate them?
I rarely have those days to be fair but I’m always myself. If I’m having a tough day I tell them. I always keep it real.
Being vulnerable and having empathy are two of the most powerful traits a person can have.
What are you most grateful for today?
My family. I had a great job and was pretty happy pre-Bachelor but now I have Snez, Eve and a little girl on the way. It has shown me that there was a bigger hole than I realized, and now it’s full. It feels so right.
Ah, that’s lovely. You can tell from your social media that you guys are all so happy together, and yes, so real. Love it.
Now, what’s next for Sam Wood (baby spam aside)?
Honestly I just want to get to know and help as many people as I can through 28, and whatever else can do this.
The Bachelor and other media stuff has shown a part of me but you are there with a path to meet someone in a very romantic setting. I will be forever grateful for this experience but the more I can do that allows me to show my personality and help people understand that getting into shape can be simple, enjoyable, progressive and a lifestyle that they can sustain.
Thanks so much for your time, Sam. I don’t expect you’ll have a lot to spare once bub is here 😉
