I’m a big lover of activewear. But then, I guess you already knew that 😉 I do tend to spend most of my life in it.
And I get asked a lot for advice on what to buy. Good activewear is an investment. Sure, we want to look and feel good in it, but unlike regular clothing, it also needs to be super functional.
Is the waist high enough? Are the tights see-through? Will this jacket keep me cosy on my way to training on a winter’s morning? Is there a pocket for my car key when I run? Will it make me sweat less? Or run faster?! So many questions for each item we choose.
So I thought I’d share with you my 7 absolute activewear essentials.
7 Absolute Activewear Essentials
These are the pieces I wear week in week out. These are the pieces I may have bought four or five years ago and still wear today. These are the pieces that transcend fashion, trends and seasons. These are the pieces you can wear and wear no matter how you like to get your fit on. And these are the pieces that you are guaranteed to love forever.

1. Issy Tank by The Upside
I love this tank in all its versions – cotton, wicking, black, white, blue, stripe.
The neckline is a flattering scoop, the armholes not too deep, the cut generous and roomy, a great length. It’s my number one go to workout tank. I like that it’s not tight against your body, as it feels cooler to work out in.
2. JAGGAD Classic 7/8s
I think I may have been one of the first people to buy these tights way back when JAGGAD first launched on Stylerunner years ago, and I still wear these every week without fail.
Simple, classic monochrome. Uber cool without trying to be. Go with anything, mega flattering, 200% squat-proof and great for all workouts (including brunch). The JAGGAD 7/8s (either in this classic black or in the always lovely seasonal prints) are supportive and stylish, the ultimate in activewear.
3. Dharma Bums High Waisted Yoga Pants
It’s hard to beat a pair of Dharma Bums tights when you’re getting your yogi on.
Super comfy, soft fabric, lightweight, non see-through, no zips or pockets to cause discomfort, pretty pretty prints, four-way stretch and ethically made to keep your karma clean. I have several pairs. Probably too many for the amount of yoga I do, which is why you’ll often see me in these on the school run 😉
Also available in regular waist, and some 7/8s and cropped versions too. Plus you can get the full-length ones altered if you like a print but want them shorter.
4. Swiftly Long Sleeve Top by lululemon
The Silverscent fabric that the Swiftly tops are made from is pretty clever. It dries soooo fast and stops you stinking of sweat. Apparently you can wear it a few times before you need to wash it, although I’ve not actually tested that theory out 😉
It’s lightweight but still keeps you cosy on those chilly mornings or winter runs when you don’t want anything too heavy or bulky.
Best of all, if you’re tall like me, the proportions are perfect – you can pull it down over your bum and poke your thumbs through the thumbholes without cutting off circulation to your hands. Thank you, lulu.
Also love love love the Swiftly tank in the same fabric, this is a great light tank for a hot HIIT workout or run.
5. Vie Active Rockell Tights
The Rockells are a classic well-made pair of workout tights in a luxe compression fabric that feel amazing on. They look pretty amazing too.
There’s an internal drawcord if you need to custom your fit and usually a few prints (and a couple of lengths) to choose from, my all time fave is the Black Leopard. So so good.
Don’t forget, you can get a 25% discount using my special code TFC_25 at the checkout, woop woop.
6. Running Shorts by lululemon
I LOVE lululemon running shorts. I actually don’t wear any other brand when it’s pins-out time.
It’s all about the fabric (four way stretch that is light and floaty) and fit (I go for the slightly longer inseam ones given I’m tall). They have a soft comfy waistband, built-in liner, and there’s always a pocket or two for your key if you’re going for a run.
I love the Tracker and the Run Times, but if you prefer shorter ones, the classic Speed Shorts are what you need.
7. Scuba Hoodie by lululemon
Another lulu piece! This hoodie is so warm and so easy to throw on, wash, throw on again and again. It’s a must for winter. It has a fab hood, pockets, thumbholes and a spare hair tie attached to the zipper.
Get classic black or grey and you’ll be cosying up in this for years.
Just add in a statement piece (or two) from P.E Nation, a few muscle tanks, a couple of sweats from First Base and some more cute tights by Nimble, lulu, JAGGAD, and lilybod and that pretty much sums up my workout wardrobe! And let’s not forget the Nikes 😉
