The very first exercise class I took was a spin class. I was anxious and frightened, sat at the back and did my best to keep up and not vomit.
I can’t say I was hooked immediately, but I persevered for a few weeks and before I knew it, I was kinda committed.
Spin is a brilliant way improve your cardiovascular fitness and endurance, building muscle in the legs at the same time. Throw in some good music, a dark room and the right instructor, and it’s pretty hard to beat for a bit of intense sweaty fun.
I’m still a spin-lover 5 years later, and my fave place to go to ride my heart out is Scenic Cycle.
Currently with two locations – Sydney’s CBD and Manly on the Northern Beaches – you’re in for a treat when you park your bum on a saddle at Scenic.
Here are 9 Reasons to Ride with Scenic Cycle.
1. The view
At the front of the room at Scenic Cycle, there are two massive screens. On those screens you’ll see some amazing scenery from around the world. Tom Sproats, the founder and CEO of Scenic Cycle, travels the world filming all the footage himself, then comes home to edit it and set it to the right music tracks.
So one day you might be riding The Alps, the next Hawaii, New York, New Zealand or Canada…
It means you can travel the world without having to get shots, learn a new language or do a last-minute passport renewal. The timetable tells you which ‘destination’ each class is, so you can choose new places or old favourites.
Just quietly, it can also take your mind off the pain you’re inflicting on your body 😉
2. The instructors
All the instructors at Scenic Cycle are bursting with energy and passion. They love their jobs! Like, in a little bit of a cray cray way haha.
Each has their own unique style, of course, so try out a few to find your faves. They’ll push you so that you’re getting the most out of your workout without making you want to punch them in the face – they’re too enthusiastic and nice for that.
3. The music
Always loud and pumping, exactly what you need.
Also, some classes are music-based rather than destination based, so if you’re a Foo Fighters, Calvin Harris or Michael Jackson fan, for example, you get a whole 45 minutes of personal music nirvana.
4. The options
Two locations (and watch this space for more), music or destination based classes, numerous instructors and so many class time options on the schedule, you’re going to find something that you love, without a shadow of a doubt.
5. The Red Zone
In every class, often at the end but not always, there is a Red Zone track. The lights go off. The instructor stops talking. And you just lose yourself in your ride. It’s an awesome experience.
6. The whole body workout
It’s not just the legs that get a workout at Scenic… in every class there’s a lift track to work that upper body too. Those weights might look like baby ones, but boy do you feel the burn with the amount of reps you do during that track.
Plus, each class is designed to work different muscle groups and energy systems by putting you through your paces with sprints, endurance tracks, seated and standing climbs etc.
And you will leave dripping in sweat. The sign of a great workout.
7. The stats
If you’re into tracking your progress with statistics, then the back row is for you. All the bikes there measure your speed, wattage output, calories burned…. And then you get a report emailed to you at the end of each class so you can compare your results to previous classes.
You can even see your numbers on a screen in the studio if you fancy a bit of healthy competition with the person on the bike next to you 😉
8. The bikes
Now, I have sat on a number of spin bikes in my time! And I can tell you, these are the comfiest. They’re super sturdy, give a smooth ride and won’t damage your under carriage. ‘Nuff said.
9. The extras
You can hire cleats (special spin shoes that attach to the pedals of the bikes, they’re epic). And when you book online you can reserve your fave bike (mine is next to the fan because I get into a hot sweaty mess). A towel is provided on your handlebars, too so you can travel light.
You can even buy snacks and Scenic Cycle co-branded lululemon gear. It’s the little things…
