Rowing is the latest workout phenomenon sweeping the United States by storm and if you’re in Sydney, you’re in for a treat because we’ve now got our very own boutique rowing studio in the CBD.
CREW is a new purpose-designed rowing studio founded by local athletic legend Mike Aldridge. Mike’s also the Head Coach, and he knows a thing or two about rowing, having captained his school’s rowing club back in the day. He was also pretty talented at rugby and came to a point in his sporting career where he had to choose between his two passions. For a while at least.
After a successful rugby career in Europe, Mike has returned to Australia and returned to his first love – minus the boat and oars!
Conveniently located towards the Circular Quay end of the CBD, CREW is full of those fancy hand-crafted wooden water rowers (by, um, WaterRower) made famous by Kevin Spacey on House of Cards. Well, if they’re good enough for the TV President of the United States…. 😉
If you’ve never rowed on a water rower before, you’ll notice the difference immediately. Smoother strokes that mimic the real sculling action of rowing in the water, there’s no clunky chains or horrid noise, an altogether more pleasant experience.
Which is just as well, because this workout is a killer! In the best possible way, of course. I tried the CREW 101 with some fellow ClassPass ambassadors and boy, did we sweat.
If the thought of 45 minutes on a rower fills you with dread and fear, don’t worry. Even Mike says he’d be bored doing that. So he designs each session with high intensity intervals on the machines, alternating with some extra core and upper body work with the dumbbells, resistance bands, etc. In my class, we did dips, push-ups, planks, bicep curls… all the good stuff!
Rowing Provides a Full Body Workout
You really do get a full body workout at CREW. Even before you step off the rower and on to the mat for those extra strength exercises. Why? Because contrary to what you may believe, rowing is not all about the arms.
In fact, says Mike, it’s more like 60% legs, 20% core and 20% arms. Kind of a cardio/strength combo of leg presses and upper body… And I can tell you right now that your heart rate will go through the roof. Mine got to 190 at one point. Yes, OMG.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never rowed before, start with the 101 Class like I did. Your technique will be corrected if necessary and you’ll soon feel positively Olympian as you get your sprints on.
I love that it’s a low impact exercise (easy on my dodgy knees) that still gives massive all round benefits. Toning, sculpting and strengthening my muscles whilst burning those calories too (thankfully, because I finished the class with a ClassPass cupcake, oops).
It’s funny, because in the gym, I avoid the rower like the plague. But for some reason, I was still really excited about coming in to try out CREW and I wasn’t disappointed. I totally loved it. Can’t wait to come back for more.
CREW got me hook, line and sinker.
