I’ve just started using ClassPass (a kind of gym membership that gives you access to a whole bunch of different gyms, studios and other fitness stuff – but more of that in another post another time).
The first class I booked was at 38X Fitness in Manly on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, for a class called 38X Afterburn. Yep, sounds a bit scary doesn’t it?
I wasn’t sure what to expect but I did know that, as a guest, I needed to arrive a bit early in order to get my own heart rate monitor. This also gave me a great opportunity to chat with Founder/Director David Allan about the 38X concept and how it all works.
Which was fascinating, actually.
The ‘38’ refers to the 38 hours after your workout. If you do it right, you can keep burning calories during these 38 hours. So as I sit here typing, I am still benefitting from the effects of the bike, rower and treadmill at lunchtime today. That’s already enough to get me interested (and gives me a totally legit reason to type #inmyactivewear).
The trainer gets you to work at a level where you lift your heart rate to 85% or more of your maximum working heart rate during high intensity intervals throughout the 45 minute session.
And they get you to keep it there for set amounts of time (I think a total of about twenty minutes, the remainder of the time being strength training at a lower intensity – although truly, none of it felt low intensity haha).
So your metabolic rate continues to peak higher and higher. And even after your green smoothie, shower, grocery shop, couch time and sleep, it’s still working at a higher rate than after a standard traditional hour-long workout.
But how do they know how hard you’re working, I hear you ask.
Well, this is the super clever bit that I LOVED. Everyone is wearing a heart rate monitor by MyzoneMoves. And your heart rate and percentages are tracked via this monitor and displayed on the big TV screens around the gym.
So you can see exactly how hard you’re working… Accurate results. Ability to track your progress over time. No freakin excuses, people. It’s brilliant.
And easy, because each zone of work effort is colour coded. When you’re at the 85%, your little tile on the screen is red, for example.
And if you’re a member of the gym, you take your heart rate belt with you so that if you go for a run or do another kind of workout, you can wear it and keep track of all your stats as the info gets fed into an app that you have on your phone. Genius, right?
To be honest, they could have told how hard I was working by my beetroot face and pools of sweat, but still, who doesn’t love cold hard data?
In this session, I burnt about 500 calories. And I reckon I could do more (it was my first time, remember). Which is why I’m going to go back next week and give it another go.
It was seriously intense. But it was seriously effective and a whole lot of fun too. Great people, happy vibe and can I just say, a beautiful ‘space’ to work out in. I really, really enjoyed it.
So if you’re in the ClassPass tribe, definitely check it out. And if you’re a local, go and do a trial. Because I think you’ll enjoy it too.
