Are you one of those people who can run 10km without breaking a sweat?
Literally buckets of the stuff. During the summer months, even at the 5.45am session at CrossFit, I’m sweating just during the warm up/stretch bit of the class. Before 6am, people!
Bane of my life. I thought that it would improve as I got fitter. Nope.
Incidentally, I have heard that fitter people actually sweat more, and faster than unfit people because their body responds quicker to the pressure a workout puts on it… Regardless of whether this has or has not yet been scientifically proven, I’m going to run with that (pardon the pun)…
I sweat because I am super-fit. Fact.
And I have to chose my running gear accordingly.
In Summer, for example, I can only run in shorts. In Winter, even if I’m going full-length for the tights, they need to be the right fabric, breathable, sweat-wicking, light but tight, and maybe a few mesh panels for extra ventilation… you know the score.
I need to plan ahead to 5kms into my run, when I’m hot and sweaty, not just how I’m feeling as I’m getting out of my car to sub-zero temperatures. OK, so it’s never actually sub-zero in Sydney, but it sure as hell feels like it sometimes, brrr.
And on top? Well, it’s hard to go past lululemon athletica.
For a while now, one of my go-to running tops has been the Swiftly Racerback Tank. And this winter, because I’ve been doing more running and training in the cold, the Swiftly Long Sleeve Tops have been in very high rotation too. Frankly, I’d be lost without them. And cold.
So what is it about these two items that make me love them so much?
Well, the cut and the styling details are great. Long length (I size-up in the tank for a looser fit and a longer length which I prefer), flattering shape, thumbholes in the long sleeve… They’re super-comfy, light-as-air and soft against the skin. #winning.
But wait, there’s more. Because both of these fave garments are made with a high-spec technical fabric called Silverescent ®.
Why is this important?
Because, my sweet sweaty friends, the Silverescent ® technology stops you from stinking. Pretty freaking handy if you’re grabbing a coffee after your run, or picking the kids up from school post-workout, or if you actually want to wear that running top more than thrice before having to chuck it in the bin.
Apparently, you can even wear your top, sweat profusely and NOT WASH IT! Then wear it again the next day. And the next. In all honestly, I’m pretty big on regular clothes-washing, so I’m not sure if I’m game to test my Swiftlies to that degree. I’ll just take lulu’s word on that one.
So, what’s the low down?
First up, did you know that when you sweat it actually doesn’t smell. What? Right, it doesn’t smell. What makes you smell is the bacteria in specific areas of your body (I’m guessing the armpit is one of those areas huh?)… yep, these little blighters consume the sweat (yum yum) and their by-product is what creates the stink. Hmm, nice.
And so lululemon attacks the real source of the problem, the bacteria. Let’s get a bit technical here. Pay attention, reader, it’s time to get your boffin on…
The Silverescent ® technology is powered by X-STATIC ®, a 99.9% silver fibre that permanently bonds itself on to the surface of the yarn of the fabric so it stays put and doesn’t get worn out and can’t be washed out.
Then, when you sweat, the silver and air oxidise and it is this oxidation process that inhibits the growth of the bacteria. Hence eliminating stink. Apparently the hotter and wetter the environment, the better it works, woohoo, bust out your bikram and stay smelling fresh.
Check out what lulu has to say about Silverescent ® here (they explain the boffin stuff really well).
So is this all a marketing gimmic or is it for real?
Hard to say exactly but what I can say is that these are definitely two of my fave gym gear items, without a shadow of a doubt. And they would be regardless of the anti-stink technology. The fact that I own each in multiple colourways is testament to that.
I also know they dry super quick on the line. And so far, no-one in the post-run coffee line has retreated out of my personal space for clean air. And given how much I sweat, this is no mean feat. Thanks, lulu. Now I like to think my sweat don’t stink!
PS. This post is not sponsored by lululemon athletica, I wish haha!
They did send me a running outfit to try out – the Pace Rival Crops are AWESOME by the way, thank you lulu– but I was already, and will always be a massive massive fan of the Swiftly Run Tanks and L/S tops, as you can see from previous posts – 6 lululemon Pieces I Can’t Live Without, Hands Up for Thumbholes and Winter Workout Essentials.
