Two years ago, I participated in my first March Charge.
It’s basically a month long running ‘event’ to raise money for The Cancer Council, to help people who are already battling the disease and for research to help find a cure.
I put ‘event’ in inverted commas because basically you are the main event!
You register and set yourself a challenge of how many kms you will cover in the month of March. Then, as you run (or walk) you add your kms tally onto your fundraising page so you (and any of your adoring fans) can see your progress at a glance.
When you share your fundraising page with your friends via email, Facebook or twitter, they can see how you’re going, read your story and donate money to this worthwhile cause.
The registration process is easy, and there’s no registration fee, it’s completely free.
The way I see it, I get an opportunity to spend a month outdoors giving running a red hot go again (it’s been over a year since I’ve run properly).
And more importantly, I get an opportunity to raise money for The Cancer Council.
At some point in our lives, almost all of us are touched by cancer.
If you haven’t lost anyone you love yet to the disease, then count all your blessings, and then count them again. Because it’s heartbreaking and life-changing, and bloody hard to come to terms with.
Almost 5 years ago, my beautiful, strong, healthy Mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Despite numerous visits to her GP and even various tests and scans, she kept being given the all clear for anything nasty.
By the time she was actually diagnosed, it was too late. The cancer had already spread to her lungs and her liver, she was given just a couple of months to live.
6 weeks later, and Mum was gone.
I dream of a day when good people aren’t taken too soon. When families aren’t left behind not really knowing how to handle their grief. When the number of cancer patients is low and survival rates are high.
The only way it can be achieved is if we all do our little bit to help. I’m going to run – 80 kms eeeeeek – and you can join me by registering, or help me by donating on my sponsorship page.
Thanks so much in advance to anyone who sponsors me, I truly appreciate it as I know we are all asked for money so often. Thank you.
