I’m almost 6 foot tall.
Being a giant has its advantages for sure… you never have to wait for your new threads to be hemmed. You can reach everything on the top shelves of the grocery store, and then help the little old ladies who can’t. And you can always see the stage at concerts and festivals.
The downsides? Walking in high heels is tricky. Your choice of men (or women) is somewhat limited (unless you bag yourself a hubby like mine who, like Rod Stewart, doesn’t mind his better half being taller than him). And finding clothing that fits well is a never-ending nightmare.
One-piece swimsuit? Forget it.
When it comes to ‘fit fashion’ though, I’ve done all the hard work for you lovely glamazons. Here are my top picks for the 180cm+ ladies out there.
Best Fit Gear For Tall Girls
I have three current fave workout tanks that are nice and loooooooong. Two are by Jaggad – the Loose Fit Tank and the Muscle Tee. Both are made with a cool wool blend… they’re really light, a joy to wear and regulate your body’s temperature as you heat up and cool down. Clever huh?
The other is the Sasha Muscle Tank by Vie Active, which is a bit heavier (so better in the cooler months or early morning/late night workouts) and also made with a merino wool blend.
All three sit well down on my hip. The Sasha tank in particular is very long. They’re easy to tuck in if you need to during an inversion or burpee bonanza, cover everything when you’re sat on your spin bike, super flattering and mega comfy.
These are all a loose fit, which is my preferred fit for almost any workout, but if you like something a little more close-fitting, then you can’t go past the classic lululemon Cool Racerback.
Long sleeve tops
My all-time fave long sleeve is the lululemon Swiftly. Great length in the body and the arms. I size up, but you don’t even have to, I just prefer it not to be too tight. Thumbholes, soft fabric and Silverescent technology to stop you stinking, this is a must.
Another great long sleeve is the Violent Orange Wrap Me Up Long Sleeve top – a relaxed fit, heavier soft and cosy fabric that hangs and swings nicely, great neckline, comfy thumbholes and the cutest little message on the side at the hip (‘working out is just one of the things I do’).
Most tights (not all) are long enough in the length for us tallies. OK, so a 7/8 tight might look like a ¾ on us, but that’s no big deal.
The issue is really in the rise of the tight. Because we have long bodies, what you see on the model online is not necessarily where the waistband is going to sit on you. If possible, try your leggings on; bend over in them, jump up and down in the change room… otherwise you could end up with tights that you’re forever yanking up for fear of showing off your g-banger to everyone in the gym.
My top picks are…
For running, the Pace Rival Crop or Speed Tight from lululemon – great length, fab fabric, medium rise and an internal draw cord to keep ‘em where you want ‘em.
For yoga, it’s got to be Dharma Bums – all of their prints come in a perfectly proportioned high-waisted version, so go for that option, definitely – they’re really soft and comfortable, I guarantee you will love them and they will fit you so well.
Plus Dharma Bums have a growing range of ¾ and knee-length tights in beautiful prints, all with a high waist option – perfect for Spring and Summer if you don’t want to inadvertently turn every yoga session into a bikram one!
For barre or gym, try the Vie Active Rockells. High/mid waistband, awesome length and nice firm compression fabric.
For just hanging out on the weekend, I love The Upside Dance Pant – super high waist (a real belly-warmer) and always the funkiest prints in town.
When the weather warms up and running in tights is too freaking hot, you want to get your pins out. I have not found any running shorts that have a better fit, fabric and function than lululemon ones.
Try the Run Times Short (similar in style to the Speed Shorts) or the Tracker Short. They always have one or two styles with a longer inseam, look for 4” or more.
And if you’re buying something online from another brand, get them to measure inseam for you so you don’t waste time or money (as I have on many an occasion) buying something you won’t feel comfortable sprinting or squatting in later.
Jackets and Hoodies
OMG the new Nike Tech Fleece Cape is amazing. Longer curved hem at the back covers the bottom of even a 6 footer, the sleeves are long enough that the thumbholes don’t cut off circulation to your hands, and it just drapes beautifully when it’s not done up.
You can buy these from Stylerunner or Nike themselves.
I also love The Upside Recovery Hoodies – so easy to throw on, just covers your bum, keeps the chill off in the early Summer mornings or all day during Spring and Autumn. I have three. Ooops.
Ronald McDonald shoes?
Well, you’re likely to have big feet, right? I am a US11 in women’s trainers. This equates to a US9.5 mens. So I often check the mens selection out too as there can be more stock of the same shoe and better colourway choice. My little trick.
And on my tall girl wishlist?
The Men’s yoga mat from lulu – my hands and my feet are BOTH off the mat when I’m in cobra and our gym floor is super scratchy – it completely ruins my zen. I’m going to ask Santa to bring me that bad boy so I have all the space that this long body needs to stretch it all out.
There you go, my fave gym gear that caters for those of us who are a little more than blessed with height… no more guesswork about your gym gear riding up or falling down, or not covering all the bits you want covered.
Do you have any other tall girl faves? Let me know below so I can check them out too.
